A Newberry man was arrested some 10 hours after what the county sheriff called a "life or death" fight with a deputy.
Trevor Denois Sligh, 24, was captured around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday after he fought with a Newberry County Sheriff's deputy during a traffic stop late Tuesday night.
NCSO investigators say Sligh was driving a car without lights when he was stopped by a deputy on Cottage Avenue in the Helena section. The deputy said the man reached for something in his pocket twice when the violent struggle started.
The deputy said he could feel the item in Sligh's pocket was a pistol as they fought. The deputy used pepper spray and a TASER on the suspect, who got away on foot after hitting him in the face with his elbow.
Newberry deputies searched the area with dogs until they finally found and arrested Sligh.
"This was truly a fight for life or death," said Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster in a written statement.
Investigators say the suspect's car had cocaine and marijuana inside. Sligh is charged with assault and battery on a police officer while resisting arrest, possession of crack cocaine, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Sheriff Foster says Sligh had previously been on probation for assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature in 2008.
The deputy who was injured was treated and released from a hospital.
