UNION, SC (FOX Carolina) - Deputies said a vandalized, jammed coin machine at a Union Bi-Lo store led to the identification and arrest of three men accused of breaking into a nearby home.
Union County deputies said someone broke into the victim's Byrd Street home sometime late Monday or early Tuesday, stealing a large flat screen television, a shoe box full of change worth about $700, a gold watch, other jewelry and a few other items.
A short time later, Union police said they were called to a Bi-Lo store in the city about the vandalized coin machine where three men had tried to exchange a large amount of coins for cash, jamming the machine because some leaves were mixed in.
The men were told to return to the store a short time later to get their cash and in the meantime, police reviewed surveillance video of the men, identifying one of them, according to deputies.
When the men returned, deputies stopped them and asked to search their car where they found a gold watch hidden under a child's car seat, deputes said. The victim told deputies it was his watch.
Wendell Brannon, 29, Latevin Brannon, 21, and Markese Gregory, 19, were arrested and charged with burglary first degree and grand larceny. Deputies said they recovered the stolen items, which were worth more than $2,000. The men were all denied bond.
