As a Black person who worked on a cruise ship for a full year, I want to share my honest experience—and I say this with love, not hate. Too often, I witnessed behavior from some of our people that left me deeply embarrassed—not just for myself, but for my co-workers as well. There were countless instances of loud, disruptive conduct, strong smells of marijuana in the halls, blaring music at 3 AM, and aggressive treatment toward spa and restaurant staff.
Now let me be clear: this isn’t exclusive to Black guests—white folks definitely got drunk and wild too—but the level of entitlement and disregard for others I saw among some of our own was disheartening. We have to do better. Vacations don’t mean we abandon respect, dignity, or community values. There are other people trying to enjoy their experience too.
I’m not trying to “air dirty laundry,” I’m trying to challenge us to elevate. Because when we travel, we represent more than ourselves—we carry our culture, our history, and our pride. Let’s start acting like it.
A cruise means you are sharing vacation with others. Respect is mandatory.
