Troy Knapp's killing was 10 years in the making, a gradual death by inches and degrees.
His brutal beating at the hands of an angry mob sparked outrage and spurred marches a decade ago. But long after the headlines faded, Knapp soldiered on in a battered and broken body that no longer responded to his commands.
Bedridden, In Chronic Pain and Saddled with Seizures, Knapp hung on until Nov. 6, when his body finally gave out for good. At age 43, he became North Charleston's, SC 11th homicide of 2009, the victim of a slow-motion killing too old to carry the possibility of a murder charge.
Knapp died as a result of Severe Injuries he Suffered in his October 1999 Beating,
Charleston County Coroner Rae Wooten said. But there is nothing more police can do.
South Carolina Law Won't Allow a Murder Prosecution in a Case where the Victim lives more than three years after his injuries were inflicted.
Six men were convicted of lynching in the attack on Knapp. Just two remain in prison, though they are expected to be released within the year.
That doesn't sit right with Knapp's family.
"I think it sucks," said Angela Knapp, his sister and caretaker. "Their lives are just getting started as his is ending. I think they should at least have to pay to bury him."
Knapp, a former auto mechanic, was 34 when he and friend Gary Thornburg were attacked while riding their bicycles near Bexley Street and South Rhett Avenue. Thornburg escaped serious injury, but Knapp was beaten so badly he was in a Coma for weeks.
"When I first saw him in the hospital, I said 'They beat him to death. He just didn't die,' " his aunt, Annie Minnick, said.
When Knapp finally awoke, he was mostly Paralyzed, Unable to Walk or Take his young son on the fishing trips they used to share. Doctors had to Remove a Portion of his Brain and a Section of Skull, Leaving Him with a Large Depression in his Head. He couldn't remember much about the attack itself.
Police initially Charged 16 Suspects between the ages of 14 and 22. The Case stoked Racial Tensions, as the Suspects are Black and the Two Victims White ...
After the case ended with guilty pleas from a half-dozen defendants in the spring of 2001, Knapp carried on as best he could. Unable to Feed, Clean or Care for Himself, he continued to live in a small, weathered home on Lambert Street, where his family tended to his many needs. Somehow, he kept his sense of humor. He once joked that he was going to look up actor Lee Majors to learn where he could be fitted for a bionic brain and legs. He refused to be bitter, his sister said.
After hanging on for so long, death came suddenly. Knapp had a seizure on the night of Nov. 5. The next morning, his stepfather found him unresponsive and yelled for his sister to call EMS. It was too late. He was already gone.
Knapp's family went into debt to pay for his funeral, his sister said. He never got a dime of the restitution money his attackers had been ordered to pay, and no life insurance company would touch him. If his aunt hadn't offered a burial plot next to his grandparents, Knapp's family might not have had a place to lay him to rest, Angela Knapp said.
"For 10 years I took care of him. Now, I don't know what I'm going to do," she said, gazing around the home. "He was a very good person, a real joy to be around. He's going to be greatly missed."

Last December marked the 25 st. Anniversary of a Vicious but Virtually Unknown Racially-Motivated Murder. On the night of December 29/30, 1992, Melissa “Missy” McLauchlin was Abducted, Raped, Tortured, and Murdered just outside Charleston, South Carolina, simply because of who she was. WHITE. This killing is not celebrated like the James Byrd and Matthew Shepard murders. “Anti-racist” groups do not include her name in fundraising letters. There is No Hate Crime Legislation Named In Her Memory. There were no MTV or PBS documentaries made about the attack, and ministers did not arrange protests or candlelight vigils. Missy McLauchlin is not a name that comes up in “sensitivity” courses or in Lessons on Bigotry and Intolerance. Indeed, her murder was Not even Classified as a Hate Crime by the Police. Police Reports paint a clear picture of what happened. Missy McLauchlin, 25, was a native of Wixom, Michigan, living with her fiancé’s family in North Charleston, South Carolina. On the night she died she had an argument with her fiancé, John Owen, at a nightclub. She stormed out of the club and began to walk home. Police spotted her, obviously drunk, and gave her a ride home, but she quickly set out on foot for another club. Three black men, Matthew Mack, Matthew Williams, and Joseph Gardner pulled up alongside in a car and started a conversation. They offered her drugs if she would come back to their Trailer with them to party. Miss McLauchlin, who had a History of Drug Problems, foolishly accepted their offer. ( this is what the murders told police. they may have instead, forced her into the car at gun point. for this is how they raped her, at gun point. )
The Men had spent Most of the Day Drinking and Watching Pornographic Videos of Black Men having Sex with White Women. At one point Mr. Mack Exploded in Anger at his white girlfriend, saying he wanted to “stab her,” but that “it ain’t got to be her, any white” would do. Mr. Williams said he wanted to have sex with a white woman and had Previously made a “New Year’s Resolution” to “Kill a White Bitch.”
It was in this state of mind that the four returned to the trailer where the three blacks lived. The men offered Miss McLaughlin No Drugs, She Refused to have Sex. Then, She began to Resist, Especially when the men wanted to Sodomize Her, and soon the men were Raping Her. They Raped Her Over and Over Again. Even Invited more Blacks to join in and they did .... 3 more from the Trailer Park .... Not One Tried To Help the Poor Woman !!??
They put out the word within the Trailer Park that they had “captured a white woman,” and three other blacks arrived and Raped her too. Two black women, girlfriends of some of the rapists, were present in another room of the trailer, but did nothing to stop the attack. ( 3 more joined in )

After they had enough, all night and into the morning, the men decided to get rid of the Evidence—including Miss McLauchlin. They Soaked Her in Bleach and Hydrogen Peroxide, and Scrubbed -
Her in the Shower with a Nylon Brush. In the hope of Ridding Her Skin of Sperm or other Evidence that could be Linked to Them. They Forced Her to Scrub Out her Vagina, with the Same Chemicals. They also Talked Openly of Killing Her.
The men handcuffed her, blindfolded her, and put a heavy coat over her head. They then took her to a car, and forced her down onto the floorboards in the back. After they had driven for some time, she managed to get out of the handcuffs and began to struggle. Joseph Gardner, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, reached over the seat, held back her head, and shot her twice in the face. The driver pulled over 14 miles outside Charleston, where Mr. Garnder shot her three more times in the face and once in the arm. The men dumped her on the side of the road, drove back to Charleston, and went nightclubbing. A passing driver found Miss McLauchlin, miraculously alive, but she died before the ambulance arrived.
It took police four days to identify the body, and a day later they located the Trailer where Miss McLaughlin was Repeatedly Raped. By January 9, 1993, police had arrested seven people including two of the ringleaders—Matthew Mack and Matthew Williams—and two women, Edna Williams and Indira Simmons, who were charged with being accessories to murder and sexual assault. Three of the rapists were sailors stationed at nearby Charleston Naval Base. The only suspect not in custody was the Triggerman, Joseph Gardner, who had carried out his New Year’s Resolution. Mr. Gardner, who was AWOL from the Navy, eluded police for nearly two years, and might never have been caught had the FBI not put him on the “Ten Most Wanted” list. He was living in Philadelphia when someone saw his picture in the Post Office and tipped off the Police. He was Arrested on October 20, 1994, and is now on Death Row. Police suspected a Racial Motivation from the Start, since they found a “crudely written racial diatribe” in the trailer, complete with racial epithets about white oppression, which claimed blacks were “justified in seeking revenge.” However, and as is common with black-on-white violence, police and the media tried to hide the racial angle. “I think we have to be responsible to the community and the people we protect,” explained North Charleston Police Captain Chad Caldwell. “I didn’t want to believe this was a Racial Crime. And we tried to look for other Motivations.”

The Horrific Black-on-White Violence that Destroyed the Lives of the Two Young People who had been Dating just a short time. Investigators say Christian and Newsom were on a, Jan. 6, 2007, date and were in the process of leaving a friend’s apartment complex.
Christian reportedly was sitting at the wheel of her Toyota SUV and Newsom was at her side in the open door, Kissing Her, When they were Attacked by the Armed Gang Members.
According to court documents, the two were tied up, blindfolded and taken to one Defendant’s Rental Home. Shortly thereafter, Newsom was sexually assaulted, shot in the head, set on fire and his body was left beside railroad tracks. The attackers allegedly took 24 hours to kill Christian, Raping her multiple times and spraying bleach in her mouth to destroy evidence before stuffing her in plastic and dumping her in a closed trash can.

The News reported two years ago after the first round of trials in which the suspects were found guilty.
Christian’s father, Gary Christian, said he no longer will sit in an area of the courtroom near where the defendant and his attorneys sit in the Knoxville, Tenn., courtroom.

The trial for Thomas may be the end of the case. Alleged co-conspirator Vanessa Coleman also had been granted a new trial because of the earlier judge’s actions, and was convicted in a second trial and sentenced to 35 years.
Earlier convictions for Lemaricus Davidson and Letalvis Cobbins stood because of the physical evidence that linked them to the crimes.
Defendant No. 5, Eric DeWayne Boyd was found guilty of being an accessory and sentenced to 18 years.
Davidson was given the death penalty. Cobbins was given life in prison, the sentence for Thomas before a new trial was ordered.
The attack happened when such Black-on-White Violence was just starting to gain attention, and grabbed the headlines because of the extreme violence involved. ( WHERE ?? )

The suspects were arrested within a few days of the attack in the Knoxville and Lebanon areas.
Prosecutors have Explained the Suspects Carjacked the Couple and decided to get rid of Newsom before pursuing their Sexual Attack on Christian. BLOODY ANIMALS .........
