Stephen Braden Powell Charged in Shooting Death of 11-year-old Anderson Girl





A 17-year-old has been charged with the shooting death of an 11-year-old in Anderson, Anderson Police Chief Jim Stewart announced during a news conference Wednesday morning.

Police told WYFF News 4 that an investigation began after a post was made on Facebook with someone claiming he shot 11-year-old Ja'Naiya Scott.

The post said that he killed the girl, was feeling guilty and offered prayers to her family.
When asked about the Facebook post during the news conference, Stewart said police were aware of it.
Stewart said Powell asked for a lawyer when he was questioned.
Powell was picked up in Spartanburg County and taken to the Anderson Police Department overnight.
Scott, another 11-year-old and an 18-year-old were shot about 1:30 a.m. June 23 at a home on W. End Avenue in Anderson.
All three victims were taken to AnMed Health Medical Center, where Scott was pronounced dead.
The surviving victims are female and ages 11 and 18. Stewart said the 11-year-old is in critical condition and the other teen was in stable condition as of June 24.
The victims were inside the home when more than 35 shots were fired.

Steward said two guns, a rifle and a pistol were used in the shooting and they are looking for another suspect.

There is a $10,000 reward for information in the case.
